Tax File Numbers

We want to help you get the most from your super investment. That’s why we encourage you to supply your tax file number to avoid paying tax penalties.

If we do not have your TFN recorded, a tax of 46.5% will apply to the total of your concessional (pre-tax) contributions under the following circumstances:

  • If you opened your account before 30 June 2007 - all concessional contributions if they exceed $1,000 per year.
  • If you opened your account on or after 1 July 2007 - all concessional contributions.

How do I provide my TFN?

Providing us with your TFN is quick and easy.

  • Login to your online Media Super account
  • Complete a Tax file number collection form
  • Contact us via email
  • Send a fax to 1800 246 707
  • Write to us at:
Locked Bag 1229, Wollongong, NSW, 2500

If the TFN provided to us is incorrect, you must complete a new Tax file number collection form.

What are my responsibilities?

According to legislation, it is your responsibility to ensure that Media Super has your TFN on file. If your employer has neglected to supply your TFN to us, you will still be subject to tax penalties.

Why 46.5%?

The 46.5% tax applied to concessional contributions under the above circumstances consists of a penalty tax of 31.5% (including Medicare levy) on top of the normal 15% contributions tax.

What about non-concessional contributions?

If we do not have your TFN recorded, we cannot accept any non-concessional (after-tax) contributions to your super account.

Non-concessional contributions are all voluntary contributions that are funded with after-tax income. Spouse contributions are also non-concessional contributions.

When is the penalty tax applied?

The penalty tax will be deducted from applicable accounts either at the end of the financial year or when part of the account balance is withdrawn, whichever occurs first.

Can the penalty tax be refunded?

You may be eligible for refund of the penalty tax applied to contributions if you supply us with your TFN within three years of the financial year that the contributions were made. All refunds are subject to processing by the Australian Taxation Office (ATO). No interest will be earned while the additional tax is held at the ATO.
