Take charge of your investments & close the gender super gap

7 Mar 2017 By Media Super Team

It’s an ugly truth that Australian women retire with significantly less superannuation than men. But by making smart investment choices, you can help close the gap and substantially increase your retirement savings – and you don’t need to be an investment guru either.

You’ve probably read articles discussing how men and women approach investing differently. That ‘women are more likely to be risk averse’ (let’s not forget these articles also say men are more likely to take on too much risk), that women ‘lack confidence in making investment decisions’. But when it comes to super, it seems that for the majority, neither women nor men are making active investment decisions.

Most Media Super members’ money is invested in the default Balanced (MySuper) option, which has provided a solid investment return of 6.54% for the financial year to 31 January 2017, above the median of 5.43%*. We also finished 2016 as one of the top 10 funds in Australia, with a Balanced (MySuper) option return of 8.7%** for a 12-month period.

Based on your stage of life, financial situation and how much risk you’re comfortable with, there may be investment options better suited to your needs.

Generally, when you’re younger, you may want to invest in growth options as you have a longer investment timeframe and usually can afford to take more risk. As you get older, you may gradually move to more conservative investments aimed at reducing volatility and preserving your balance.

Media Super has a wide range of investment options, ranging from pre-mixed options (eg Stable, Balanced, High Growth), to single asset class options (eg Australian Shares, Unlisted Infrastructure), as well as a lifecycle option and a direct investment option.

You can use our risk profile questionnaire to figure out what type of investor you are. By answering a few quick questions, you’ll know if you’re a Defensive, Moderate, Balance, Growth or High Growth investor.

Once you have your profile, take a look at our investment options, and see which ones might be appropriate for you.

Perhaps it’s true that women are more cautious about making investment decisions, but having all the information and making an educated decision isn’t a bad thing. By spending 20 minutes looking at your investment options now, you can help to close the gender super gap and find yourself substantially better off when it’s time to retire.
