A battery built for Western Australia's future

A major battery project in regional Western Australia is creating jobs, supporting local communities and helping build the energy infrastructure of the future.

In Western Australia's Wheatbelt region, a major battery project is taking shape.

Located around 230 kilometres east of Perth, the Merredin Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) is a 100MW/400MWh battery currently under construction. The project is expected to provide enough stored energy to support the equivalent of around 130,000 homes.

Merredin is Atmos Renewables' (Atmos) first greenfield development and the first battery project in its portfolio. Developed by Atmos' in-house team (in conjunction with WA development partner, Nomad Energy), the project is progressing well through construction and remains on track for commissioning in the last quarter of 2026.
Supporting local communities

While the battery itself will be an important piece of infrastructure, the project is already delivering benefits closer to home.

Around 80 jobs are expected to be supported during construction, creating opportunities for workers and businesses in the region. Atmos has also invested in local employment, including a First Nations business, workforce readiness and training initiatives aimed at building skills and supporting future employment opportunities.

The business behind the project

With 18 assets operating or under construction across the country, Atmos is one of Australia’s leading renewable energy businesses. Its portfolio more than 1.5GW operating capacity, enough to power around 775,000 homes, and a development pipeline of more than 5GW across wind, solar and battery storage projects.
For Media Super, Atmos represents an investment in a business with an established portfolio of operating assets, development capability and future growth opportunities. Since investing, we have worked closely with Atmos, helping to build a deeper understanding of its operations, projects and people.

Looking ahead

Atmos continues to develop the next generation of renewable energy infrastructure. Two of its current projects include the Parron Maam Marang Windfarm in Western Australia and the Teebar Battery Energy Storage System in Queensland. Both projects are progressing towards the commencement of construction in late 2026 and are expected to further diversify the portfolio.

Investments like Atmos form part of our long-term approach to investing on behalf of members. By investing in quality businesses, capable management teams and assets with long-term potential, we aim to deliver strong outcomes for members while supporting industries that will help shape Australia's future.
